We carry a vast selection of raw alpaca fiber for sale, including the hard to find
Black, Greys, and Maroons.
Alpaca fiber is three times stronger and seven times warmer than
sheep's wool. The shaft of the alpaca is closed and is soft to wear
against the skin. Some individuals who are allergic to wool can wear
alpaca. This highly desirable finished product offers a lifetime of
wear, insulation and shape. Alpacas come in 22 natural colors, and
numerous blends and variations are combined to produce beautiful products.
Most alpacas will yield between 5 to 10 pounds of fleece per year. Some
breeders choose to sell some of their fiber to the cottage industry of
hand weavers and hand spinners. Most breeders have found shearing is best
done on an annual basis. This keeps the fleece cleaner and helps to protect
the animal from over-heating. Professional shearers are available for hire,
but most breeders have found after several practices they can do well at
shearing their own animals.
